Ask Connie: Your Real Estate Pro

cost of home insuranceEverybody knows it’s important to do some number crunching before getting too far along in the home-search process. You need to know how much house you can afford.

When people are in the market for a new home, most know enough to look at number of bedrooms/ baths, size of yard, schools, and neighborhood. But many overlook the insurance aspect, not realizing that homes of similar size and style can vary widely in their cost to insure.

  • Proximity of a fire station or hydrant
  • Whether it’s located in a flood plain
  • How old the roof is, or what materials it’s made of
  • Whether there is a swimming pool
  • The age of the home (outdated wiring/plumbing)
  • Security equipment (burglar or smoke alarms, locks)
